PREPARATION FOR YOUR SHOOT

What about makeup?

We can help you with styling and makeup, or you can use a stylist of your choice. However, if you think you cannot reproduce a stylist’s professional makeup later on, I would encourage you to think twice about that choice. Your photo needs to look like the best version of you, as you will present yourself in real life, whether at auditions or in business promotions. That means simple and natural. Your makeup should highlight your features, without being a distraction.

What wardrobe should I bring?

No need to bring lots of wardrobe. Three or four choices would be good. Simple necklines are best. All shades of blue are camera-friendly colors. Solid colors are better than patterned or strongly colored prints. Black can be dramatic, but pulls light away from the subject, and therefore might be better for people with light skin tones and/or blond or silver hair.

Dress for your photos as you would in your professional life. Wear things you like to wear, that are comfortable, and that you feel confident in wearing.

Keep jewelry simple, non-dangling earrings, or no earrings at all, if that’s your style.

How should I get ready for my shoot?

If this is one of your first headshot sessions, determine what your “type” is, what impression you give when you walk into a room. Besides your physical traits, is your personality bright and happy, or more serious? Do you bring those traits to the characters you play, or to the job you hold? If so, let’s capture that. But, we want to capture something honest about you, so have an idea of “who you are”.

Show me your previous headshot, if you have one, and tell me what you think works, or what you would change about that photo.

Most people are a bit self-conscious about the process of having their photo taken. Please know that people are interested in seeing the real you, and most of the criticisms of your photo will come from you. So, go easy on yourself. Don’t obsess about your eyebrow or how you never liked your nose, or your ear, or something. No one else is thinking about that. They just want to see a photo of you. If you look on your shoot as an adventure, you can have fun with it, even feel confident about it.

Finally, the day before your shoot, drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is the best cosmetic.

Let’s do this!
